For one year, we embarked on an ambitious project done as a team with Thomas Dupois. Our goal was to create a Minecraft map for a multiplayer mini-game, using exclusively command blocks and data packs. It was inspired by a popular map called "Monster Industries."
As a team, we worked on game mechanics, map design, and the implementation of command blocks and data packs. Each step required close collaboration, where we had to share ideas, solve problems together, and make creative decisions to make the gaming experience as enjoyable as possible.
"Command blocks" are special blocks in Minecraft that allow programming within the game and act on various aspects of the game, such as modifying blocks, entities, items, and the environment.
"Data packs" are files that can be added to a Minecraft map to include additional data, such as command lines in the same language as command blocks, crafting recipes, item drops, and much more.
Our goal was to create a competitive Minecraft map that would showcase many different strategies. This required a lot of time to balance the game and avoid having only one viable strategy.
The principle of our game is as follows: two teams face off, each in their own base separated by a wall. Inside these bases, there are many resources to collect, allowing players to earn money, equipment, and other bonuses. At regular intervals, players can enter the opposing base to attack it and destroy their "nexus."
To win a game, you must destroy the opposing "nexus," which are immobile mobs with a lot of health located in the opposing base. It is also necessary to earn enough money and kill a certain number of opponents.
In addition to the design and development aspect of the game, this project also gave us the opportunity to experiment with the promotion and dissemination of our creation. We used several platforms to promote the Minecraft map we had created, including Youtube, Tiktok, Instagram, Reddit, and Minecraft map publishing platforms. We also created a 3D animation for a trailer of our map, which alone took a major part of the project.
